Since 1995, NRS and Greyhound Bus Lines, Inc., have teamed together to offer free Greyhound tickets to homeless and runaway youth through our “Home Free” program. More than 15,000 youth have used this to reunite with their parents or guardian. Recently, through an expansion of the program, we are now able to help even more youth in the future. The Home Free program has expanded its eligibility to include youth victims of human trafficking and are also eligible for the program through age 21. The expansion supports universal recognition that runaway, homeless, at-risk and child welfare adjudicated youth are the highest risk group for exploitation. Expanding eligibility through age 21 further aligns the Home Free program with the service eligibility age ranges of many of the state and federally funded homeless youth housing programs. NRS maintains an extensive nationwide database of trafficking-related resources and social service providers.

Home Free Program

Every year more than 1.3 million youth run away from home.  The dangers they face from assault, exploitation, illness or suicide are real. The Home Free Program helps runaway, homeless, and exploited youth return home safely.  Established in 1995 as a partnership between Greyhound Lines, Inc. and the National Runaway Safeline (NRS), the Home Free Program provides crisis intervention with the goal of reuniting minor aged runaway, homeless or exploited youth with their parent/legal guardian or an approved alternative living program.  Youth, ages 18-21 qualify for; reunification transportation with family, approved alternate living arrangements, or community-based transitional or independent living programs.

The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) is the sole organization through which a Home Free ticket may be issued.

To access the Home Free program, you must call 1-800-RUNAWAY.
